Getting to Cambria without Driving
It's not easy to get to us without driving, but it is possible and well worth the effort. You don't need a car at all. Once in Cambria, we have bicycles available for easy rides around town, along Moonstone Beach, and even to lovely San Simeon Bay. There is a local trolley that makes one-way walks and lovely hikes easy, too.
If you are already staying at a hostel in LA or San Francisco, ask around to see if anyone is driving north or south along the coast. If not, read on...
Getting to San Luis Obispo by train or bus
If you don't find a ride to San Luis Obispo, consider taking an Amtrak train. They run 3-4 times per day from L.A. or San Francisco. Tickets cost about $30-45 each way and the ride takes 5-6 hours from either L.A. or San Francisco. You can take bicycles on Amtrak and local bus connections. The bus stop for buses departing to Cambria is about a ten minute walk from the train station. With bags, you'll want to catch a local transfer bus to Cal Poly, or the Government Center, to catch Bus #12A to Morro Bay and 12B to Cambria. See info on this below.
Also check the Greyhound bus schedules that will be similarly priced and slightly faster (though not as scenic as the train ride along the coast!). Tip: Greyhound might be surprisingly more convenient for North Hollywood departures in LA, or from South of San Francisco (San Jose). Check the schedule details for the specific route, and you might find a stop closer, or easier to get to than the downtown departures. Note, upon arrival in San Luis Obispo, the Greyhound station is about 1.5 miles from the bus stop you need to Cambria. Allow extra time for the walk or with bags, you'll want to catch a local transfer bus to Cal Poly, or the Government Center, and then catch Bus #12B to Cambria. Local buses to Cambria are infrequent - see below for info.
If you arrive late, or need to be in San Luis Obispo for an early departure, consider a night at Hostel Obispo -it's within a block of the train station.
